Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Sensor.Network?
The Internet is no longer just a network of computers. It has evolved into a network of devices of all types and sizes, all connected, all communicating and sharing information all the time: smart phones, cameras, automobiles, toys, medical instruments, home appliances, even trees embedded with sensors.

This "Internet of Things" can generate an enormous volume of very small bits of data: temperature, GPS position, speed, rate of acceleration, compression, humidity, shock, altitude, and so on. Every day we are generating more data faster than ever before. This data can be used to tackle all kinds of issues—from global ones like climate change to local ones like improving traffic flow during rush hour. With current state of the art, however, it can be very difficult to access data that scientists do not generate from their own study. In many cases, original data from related studies is hard or impossible to find and only papers with interpretations of the raw data are available. It is difficult to return to the source and draw new conclusions.

Sensor.Network is a global exchange for sensor data. It allows researchers and scientists to share data with authorized partners. The service also provides tools for analyzing and visualizing the data and translating it into actionable information. Additional details are available in this article, this blog post and the following videos. The service is constantly evolving and the version you see upon logging in may not exactly match what you see in the video.

  2. What are the system requirements in order to use this site?
Sensor.Network makes use of JavaScript which is supported by all major browsers including Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari. Make sure that you are using a recent version of one of these browsers (e.g. Firefox 3.0 or later, Safari 3.0 or later) and JavaScript is enabled.

  3. How do I log in?
NEW (as of Sep 3, 2009) Please email us for an invitation code you can use to sign up at http://sensor.network.com. We are offering a limited beta at this time. After signing up, you'll be able to archive and visualize data from your own sensors and share that data with authorized partners and collaborators of your chosing.

Even if you are not yet ready to sign up, feel free to browse through our API documentation.

  4. I have an account, what do I do next?
Read our getting started guide which shows you how you can create new datastreams, insert sensor data into those streams and retrieve/visualize that data either inside a browser or through our web-based interface.

  5. How do I send feedback?
Use the sensor.network section of the forums at sunspotworld.com to discuss all issues related to sensor.network.
